Today we’d like to introduce you to Darlene Johnson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Ashanti Boutique was born in 1988. I, Darlene Johnson moved to Miami, FL where I met a friend that owned an African Boutique. I interned to learn about the history and culture of African people and studied their history as it relates to today’s society.
Ashanti Boutique became a brand in 1990, with our first storefront in Charleston,WV. Not only was it a cultural shock to the community, but a landmark of history for the state.
We offer a way of life from skincare, haircare, home art and furnishings, oils, incense, clothing and more. We have items from Ghana, Kenya, Sierra Lionne and other regions in Africa. We also offer African drumming classes, karaoke, paint and sip, crochet and jewelry making classes.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Opening a boutique was not difficult. Getting the goods shipped to the US, was our greatest challenge. Once we made connections over the continent, everything was smooth sailing.
As you know, we’re big fans of Ashanti Boutique & Emporium. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The name Ashanti Boutique is derived from The Ashanti People/Region in Ghana, Africa. They are known for their rich culture, skilled craftsmanship, kente clothe and women rulers in their historical empire.
In 2024, we changed our name to Ashanti Boutique & Emporium to welcome local vendors the opportunity to showcase their merchandise.
I studied business in college. Earning an MBA gave me the tools to transform my passion into a thriving business. I learned how to manage finances, analyze market trends, and build a strategic growth plan. I was able to craft a brand that resonates with my target audience. Most importantly, my MBA helped me think like a CEO, not just a creative—balancing vision with strategy to ensure my boutique is not only stylish, but sustainable and scalable.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Along the journey I have learned to focus on my brand, to become more knowledgeable of African culture, and the importance of our history.
One major lesson I have learned is being in a space that allows the products to be at an affordable price and still be able to afford the retail space.
